Waffle and Pick Up on a Rigid Heddle Loom

Saturday, August 24, 10am – 2pm
Instructor: Nancy Niemeyer
$55 WGGC members / $80 non-members
Experience Level: Some rigid heddle weaving experience with own loom & equipment

Class Limit: 5

Learn to use a pick up stick and make variations of waffle weave and honeycomb with warp and weft floats for textured fabrics on the rigid heddle loom. We will sample a variety of techniques. This requires your own rigid heddle loom, shuttles, and two pick up sticks. You wil pre-warp your loom at home on your own and learn the weaving technique during class. Bring drinks and lunch; a refrigerator and microwave are available for use.

Warping Instructions:

Yarn: choose one, depending on what heddle(s) you have and want to use. You will need two (2) colors of yarn.

  • 7.5 or 8 dent heddle: Choose some worsted weight kitchen cotton such as Peaches & Creme, Sugar’n Cream, Lion Cotton, or Bernat Handicrafter Cotton. You will need four or five 4-ounce balls, which should be enough for both warp and weft. Get two different colors, two (2) of one color and three (3) of the other. These yarns are readily available at Joann, Michaels, or Wal-Mart.

OR

  • 10 dent heddle: Patons’s Grace or Omega Sinfonia are mercerized sport weight cottons available at Joann and Hobby Lobby respectively. Buy a total of 450 yards, 225 yards of each of two colors,
  • OR purchase 3/2 pearl cotton available from the instrucctor who will wind off tow (2) ball of 3/2 cotton yarn, one of cream or white and one of blue. This yarn will cost $10 and you must contact the instructor to pick up from her house or the Guild house prior to class to warp your loom ahead of time.

Prior to class, warp your loom with a 6 foot warp (2 yards) 8 inches wide. Warp half way with one color, and half way with the color, so 4 inches of each color. Then, when you weave, you can see what it looks like when your warp and weft are the the same color and when they are different.
