Dye Happy is a two-day workshop that focuses on Shibori techniques on silk and other fibers using many dyeing processes and color removal.
Shibori is the Japanese word for a variety of ways of embellishing textiles by shaping cloth and securing it before dyeing. The word comes from the verb root shiboru meaning “to wring, squeeze, press” or the process of manipulating fabric. Usually we think of cloth as a two-dimensional surface. Using Shibori techniques the cloth becomes three-dimensional in form by folding, crumpling, stitching, plaiting, or plucking and twisting. After compressing the cloth using these methods, it is secured by binding and knotting.
In this workshop, we will explore the following Shibori techniques:
Binding: Plangi, braided cloth, fold and bind, pleated and bound, stitching and capping, clamp resist.
Pole Wrapping: Arashi Shibori, Vertical Wood grain (tate omokume), Horizontal wood grain (yoko omokume).
The Workshop will meet 10-4:00 in the Fibers Studio at Xavier University. Location and address will be provided to registrants.
Materials Fee: The $50 materials fee provides silks, dyes, and studio equipment. Students will complete silk samples, two scarves and a silk pillow cover.
Materials to Bring: Workshop participants should bring sewing needles, thread, and an apron or smock to protect clothing. Students must also have rubber gloves and scissors identified with name.
In accordance with WGGC Board Policy, all registrants must have been vaccinated against COVID-19. Masks and physical distancing required.
Your fee will be refunded if the workshop is canceled or changed to a different date. Five registrations are required for a workshop to be held. Students will be notified before the start date if an event is canceled due to an insufficient number of students. Eventbrite processing and credit card payment fees will not be refunded if a student cancels for any reason.
