Embroidery for Weavers

Saturday, July 13, 10am-3pm

Instructor: Marylyn Doyle

$60 WGGC members / $85 non-members

$5 Materials fee payable to the instructor

Skill level: All levels welcome

Explore 11 basic embroidery stitches to embellish your weaving. In the morning, we will make
a sampler of stitches using perle cotton thread on cotton fabric and identify each new stitch.
In the afternoon, on our sampler, we will explore some stitch options, using those from the morning session as well as additional stitches.  We’ll identify the various stitches by using a Micron pen which will be available for the participant’s use and returned to the instructor at the end of the day. Written instructions accompany the workshop.
These stitches can be worked “in hand” or, should you prefer, in a hoop. I will have available
some 5″ hoops for use that day, or you can bring your own. Think of how you would stitch
onto your weaving.

Students will be supplied with a kit which includes:

  • 10″ x 12″ 100% cotton fabric for the ground, with finshed edges so no raveling
  • #5 perle cotton thread in 2 colors, about 7 yards each
  • Choice of some DMC floss and wool
  • Two needles: #22 tapestry and #22 chenille
  • Baggie for safe keeping
  • Instruction booklet and a couple sheets of paper

Students should bring:

  • Some finished weaving on which to design the embellishment, i.e. place mat, glasses case, iPhone case, scarf, mitttens, a wrap, blanket/afghan, vest/jacket, mug cozy
  • Scissors suitable for cutting thread
  • Pencil with eraser
  • Reading glasses or magnification (optional)
  • Individual task lighting (optional)
  • Embroidery hoop (optional)
  • Lunch and berages (A microwave and refrigerator are available.)

About the Instructor: Marylyn Doyle holds an Embroidery Guild of America certification in silk and metal threads on fabric and has, for decades, explored a variety of needlework in order to understand the history and unique characteristics of each technique. She continues to share these in local, regional, and national settings, Her embroideries have been in regional, national, and liturgical exhibits. Marylyn’s passion? Sharing with others.
