Itajime and More

Dyeing, Scrunching, Layering, Resisting to create Fabrics that Sing

Monday, April 17 and Tuesday, April 18

9:30am-4:30pm (both days)

Instructor: Kathrin Weber

$150 WGGC member / $175 non-member

Materials fee: $35 Dye Kit

Experience Level: None needed

Workshop Limit: 15

In this whirlwind two day dye workshop, we are going to address quite a few low water immersion and surface design techniques on cellulose fabric. Students will have several options to explore in class and will leave with many more ideas for dyeing later.

We will start the first day by jumping into dyeing value gradations and Parfait style dyeing as we talk about the technical end of using dyes safely and mixing colors to create an extensive colorfast palette. You will take your dyed fabric home on the first night to rinse, dry, and iron. On the second day, we will work with that fabric as we use resist, layering, shibori, and discharge techniques to take it from interesting to WOW!

Students Supply List:

  • 2 yards or so of undyed cellulose fabric: cotton, linen, rayon. Well worn linen tablecloths and napkins are great! Pull them out of retirement or go thrift store shopping.
  • Bring a 1/4 or 1/2 yard of different light colored fabrics to over-dye if you have some in your stash.
  • Feel free to bring any cotton items you’d like to dye: socks, t-shirts, flour sack towels, etc.
  • Dust mask
  • Rubber gloves
  • 6 heavy duty spring clamps
  • Several plastic containers: a few quart-sized deli or yogurt, a few pint-sized deli containers.
  • Set of plastic measuring spoons and measuring cups.
  • Scissors, quilting thread, sewing needles.
  • Your lunch and beverages. (A refrigerator and microwave are available.)

The $35 materials fee covers a Dye Kit and the mordant, sodium carbonate. The dye kit includes the seven (7) dye colors I use for all my dyeing and enough dye for this workshop as well as for more dyeing at home afterwards.

Effective August 26, 2021
