Introduction to Kumihimo Braiding on a Maru Dai

Skills needed: No prior braiding experience is required.

Kumihimo means “the gathering of threads” in Japanese and it is the best word to describe multi strand braiding that has been done in Japan, Peru and other countries for centuries. Kumihimo is a great technique for making friendship bracelets, shoe laces, drawstrings for clothing, bags or purses, key chains, necklaces, book marks… anything that would require a cord or tie. The supplies are inexpensive and the technique is simple; but the results are stunning.

In this class you will learn to measure warp for bobbins, how to wind the bobbins, how to dress the Maru Dai (Japanese braiding stand) and then once it’s all set up you will make a sample braid with four separate structures: solid square, solid round spiral, hollow round and flat. You will also be given instruction on reading patterns and some simple finishing techniques.

Be prepared to pay your $10 materials fee on the 1st day of the class. You may also want to bring a snack and beverages.

Fees are non-refundable. Your fee will only be refunded if the class is canceled or changed to a different date. Three registrations are required for a class to be held. Students will be notified before the start date if a class is canceled due to an insufficient number of students.
